The End: Part One

Writer: Team 16Team 16

In this blog we will be talking about the three new different game modes that we added into our game as well as talking about the updated guiding system implemented.

As we are coming to the end of our development stage, we have started to implement various aspects into our game to grasp our players attention. We added three new different game modes which are as followed, Piece Ban, Knighted and Kingsman. Originally, we only had one mode which was called Classic, this mode is the traditional chess that everyone plays. As a team we wanted to make our chess concept more enticing and intriguing for the players which why we added three more unique game modes to our game.

Classic is the traditional game mode that everyone plays, this has the same rules which is applied to every player when they play chess including the setup of the chess pieces for both players and the movement. This game mode is a classical game setup which every player plays. For example, for players to win they need to checkmate the King. This mode is unlocked by default. Piece Ban is a different game mode that we have implemented into our game, there are approximately 24 pieces in total instead of 32, we made sure that 12 pieces are given to each player instead of the traditional 32 chess pieces. Each player will have two of their Rooks and Bishops banned resulting in less movement options, so they will have to play more carefully not to lose many pieces. For example, players can win if they checkmate their opponents King and whoever has less than two pieces left on the board will lose. This mode is shorter as it does not last long compared to other modes while still being challenging. For players to get this mode unlocked they will need a total of 20 XP (2 wins).

Knighted is a third game mode which we added including a full set of chess pieces, in which players can win either the normal way by taking each other's King or both players Knights. For example, if player 1 loses all their Knights, then they have lost and player 2 has won. Furthermore, players must be careful on how to use the Knight, Knights move in an L shape, they can move two squares in any direction vertically followed by one square horizontally or in any direction horizontally followed by one square vertically. For players to get this mode unlocked they will need a total of 50 XP (5 wins). Kingsman is a third game mode which we added, this game is harder than the other game modes we have implemented resulting in double difficulty. Each player will have two Kings, so four in total but each player. For example, if player 1 loses 2 Kings they will lose the game. For players to get this mode unlocked they will need a total of 70 XP (7 wins).

We also improved the guiding system; the guide system changes the colour of the pieces to red if there are no available moves to be made for the player. It will then turn red as well as an animation showing the pieces shaking. This shows that the player can no longer try to make a move and its unique and effective for the user to know that their turn is done, and the other player has their turn now.
